Unselfish Devotion to this Glorious Cause from November 16th

Unselfish Devotion to this Glorious Cause

Taught by Lori Lyn Marsh

Sister Marsh started her lesson by stressing the impact we can have as sister in Relief Society. She talked about how Young Women sometimes struggle coming into RS and how some of us also struggle in coming to RS. She quoted Elder Packer, "True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior." Sister Marsh then told us that she was going to focus the lesson for today on using the formula of Doctrine-Principle-Application, plus President Joseph Fielding Smith's word to help change attitudes about RS--and help those who struggle with RS. She had a worksheet, also with this formula, for the sisters to fill out during the lesson. Here is a summary of the finished worksheet (Note the Doctrine and Principle answers were all pulled directly from the lesson manual):

Doctrine is a truth; is eternal; pertains to exaltation. It answers the question WHY? Why did Joseph organize a Relief Society?

1. Build up the kingdom
2. Establish Zion (Which was defined in class as "The pure in heart.")--it was also emphasized that we establish Zion one heart at a time.

Principle provides direction/guidelines for behavior. It answers the question WHAT? What are the guiding principles of Relief Society?

1. Benefit of women
2.Encouragement of women
3. Advancement of women
4. Mercy and relief from distress and suffering
5. Spiritual welfare

Applications are the behaviors, practices, by which doctrines and principles are enacted in our lives. They answer the HOW? (These answers came from the class):

1. Benefit of women=Humanitarian projects
2.Encouragement of women=Self-improvement classes
3.Advancement of women=Pioneers in the suffrage movement, literacy, true role, and encouragement of education.
4. Mercy and relief from distress and suffering=Vising Teaching program and humanitarian
5. Spiritual welfare=Praying for our sisters, VT lessons for sisters, being at church

Sister Marsh ended her lesson by leaving room on the worksheet for sisters to fill in personal applications. She promised that the Holy Ghost would let us know how to apply these principles in our lives.
