Unity from September 4th

Unity
Taught by Sister Checketts

Quotes Sister Checketts used during her lesson

Sister Checketts read a number of quotes from Sister Oscarson's talk: Sisterhood: Oh, How We Need Each Other--I would encourage you to reread that talk in its entirety.

" The Lord’s prophets have always called for unity. The need for that gift to be granted to us and the challenge to maintain it will grow greater in the days ahead, in which we will be prepared as a people for our glorious destiny." Elder Eyring

"Just stop it." Elder Uchtdorf (When talking about comparing ourselves to others)

Scriptures Sister Checketts referenced during her lesson

Alma 6:6
John 17:11, 21-23
2 Nephi 1:21
Mosiah 18:21
First chapter of Luke

Discussion from Sister Checkett's lesson

-Sisters defined unity as of one heart, connected, and loyal--and how in the scriptures it is defined as being one in thought , desire, and purpose with Heavenly Father and our Savior first, and then those around us.

-We should avoid contention not just with others, but how we feel about ourselves as well.

-We need to stop focusing on the things that make us different and instead find out what we have in common with one another--no matter the age difference.

-Listen to the lines of "Sisters in Zion"

-We need to listen with our minds and our hearts and pray that we can get to know and love each other more.

-We need to be able to trust one another and be trustworthy in order to create an unbreakable bond.

-How can we show that we are one with one another?

-Different stages of life create different challenges but all our sisters can be empathetic and show support to each other regardless of our current stage.

-Visiting teaching is an inspired program

-We can feel resentment when we compare ourselves to others

-Praying for each other can make a big difference

-Unity is reaching out--you never know what someone else is going through

-We need to get pass the barriers between us--there is no age barrier when it comes to Christlike service.

-We need to follow up on the promptings that we are given.

Sister Checketts shared a personal story about how her family was not active when she was growing up. When she was in high school she was going through an incredibly difficult situation. One girl who was in another ward noticed what was going on, and decided to step out of her comfort zone to reach out to Stacey. They hadn't been especially close before, but her reaching out made all the difference in Stacey's life. It also encouraged her to head back to church and ultimately was a huge catalyst in Stacey inviting the gospel back into her life.
